If this type scenario killed the BCS in 2012 (Mandel's claim), does it push the playoff to 8 teams? Just a matter of time, IMO.
It should.
That said, as long as there are conf. championship games, it should be extremely rare for a team that didn't win it's conference, let alone division, to make the playoffs. The reason is that division winners have to put their record on the line one more time than non-division winners.
Would LSU have still made the championship game in 2011 had they lost the SECCG? I doubt it.
Is it that unrealistic to envision a scenario where FSU goes 12-0, Ohio State goes 11-1, Oregon goes 11-1 and Bama goes 11-1 (only loss to LSU). FSU, OSU, Ore and LSU are all div. champs and have to play one more game. Bama sits at home What if FSU and LSU lose in their conf. championship games, or OSU and FSU? Does Bama jump them? In that scenario, the only reason Bama would have the same or better record than those teams is because those teams had to play one more game.
If you want to try to avoid this situation either get rid of conf. championship games or expand the playoffs.

Not saying I disagree, but this isn't new to the playoff format. For years during the BCS era and even before, the SEC and Big 12 were the only conferences playing a championship game while schools from the Big East, Big 10, Pac 10, and ACC sat idle that weekend.

It is more than painfully clear that the rules and considerations that cover all other teams do not cover Alabama.
I do not see how that can be mistaken. The "eye test" has never been brought up before or since that infamous occasion.
We must beat Alabama to get in. Period.

Right - Bama would have faced Okie State.
But, if Bama had beaten us in the regular season and lost a close SEC-CG? They would have gotten in anyway because of "optics" - it's all corrupt bullshite, but it is what it is.
