Joey Votto is back to being ridiculously good at hitting a baseball

In his last 45 games dating back to late June.
.412/.528/.673
Should pull another top 5 MVP vote. It's ashamed we suck monkey balls.

Over a full season, MLB players usually tend to find their typical level of production.
Votto is simply one of the 5 best players in baseball IMHO. Not surprising he would prove it again, despite his slow start.

Don't look now , but the Reds are 21-12 post break.

If we can play above .500 the rest of the year I'll be pretty excited heading into next year. We have some pitchers in Desclafani, Finnegan, Lorenzen that continue to impress me.

so, i presume he means position players as it is really hard to compare pitchers and position players.
i dont think it's that crazy at all. hard to really pin down a 5 but once you get past harper (who votto is actually better than right now but people wont like that) and trout, why not votto right around 5?

I'm sure he meant at hitting. I'd be willing to put him in the top 5.
Some combo of Trout, Donaldson, Bryant, Votto, Goldy, Rizzo

If we are talking about top 5 hitters in baseball you can make a case for Votto being the best. If we are talking about overall I don't think Votto is top 10.

top 10 maybe. top 5 no way
lets say
add Altuve, Machado, Ortiz for sure ahead of him
Mookie Betts, Bryce Harper, Miguel Cabrera, E5 are all guys id take ahead of Votto

well it's not our fault that you'd pick worse hitters ahead of him

id love to see your argument that Joey Votto is a better baseball player right now than Mookie Betts, or a healthy bryce harper. Or even a guy like Corey Seager.
Cabrera and E5, maybe. It's a matter of preference. Votto's selectivity works against him in this case

Using what measure are these guys better hitters than votto?

I'd like to see more than one season of elite hitting from altuve before putting him in this level.
Machado, great young player, not as good a hitter as votto.
Ortiz..ok sure till he retires in 5 weeks

how is that?

i think barry is talking about just hitting. im getting confused myself on if we are discussing hitting or all around players. obviously, votto doesnt offer too much outside of at the plate, so we might just be arguing different things here

I thought i made that clear

Mookie Betts- 6th in MLB in WAR. 7th in SLG. 6th off WAR. 1st in runs.
E5- 2nd in HR. 1st RBI. 12th SLG.
Bryce- has been injured, but last year + his first half speaks for itself.
Cabrera, like E5 is a matter of preference for me. I dont think i need to reflect on his body of work.
where is this better "hitter" shite coming from? The guy said he was a top 5 player

i responded to the guy that said he was a top 5 player. I dont know where hitting came in from that.
I mean its not like he is Barry Bonds-good when he doesnt walk. Yea, im sure you'll cite runs created but that is a walk heavy stat. The guy is an excellent hitter, but i think he misses on opportunities to make more things happen by being so selective. If he played on a better team the fruits of his labor would be more widely accepted. But frick, you are on the Reds. Swing the bat. Hit more HRs, drive more runs in. You're OBP can still hover around .400

i mean, you responded to barry's post which mentioned "hitters." it's not a big deal, though, i think we are all actually on the same page here.

that's just not who he is. he is an all time great at getting on base. that isn't going to change

I think the consensus would be Votto is top 5 strictly when considering hitting, but not top 5 overall.
