Well, you and Spurrier are right on about it being about talent over coaching. But no, Saban isn't the beneficiary of anything he didn't create. He came to LSU a nobody, and he built a championship caliber program. It asn't just the natty he won; he upgraded everything about the program.
That's how he got his reputation. It kills me everytime we lose to him, but we're not losing because he's a lucky beneficiary. We're losing because he's the best. And it's foolish not to analyze and emulate the best - then do it a little bit better.

So, why do we always need LBs and OTs? I understand having RCs and position coaches fighting for a few spots, but the HC has to lay out the blueprint of what's needed now and into the future.
This goes back to the LA has the best talent, anyone can win here. Yes they have athletes, guys that can play db or are safeties playing lb. Can't win on la talent alone.
I will say though playing the mustang was playing more towards our recruiting base. Get as many athletes on the field you can. Works against spread teams, but not ones that could run rt at us.

Penrod, luck has everything to do with every coach's and team's results. I don't see where LSU has "emulated" ever. More importantly, I don't understand your compulsion to praise our yearly opponent on the Recruiting Board. Having a good opinion about him is fine, though I don't, but feeling compelled to defend his "greatness" just ain't a good look on this board.

Not for Saban. But maybe the rant knows better than him.
This is false and you can't prove it which is why you keep spewing this with no facts to back it up

I played the kid to be a slow, smart, LB
And white. Don't leave that part out. You do know there are slow smart black LBs, don't you? And there are super athletic fast white LBs? And you must not be aware that some of the greatest middle linebackers in NFL history were black, intelligent and athletically average, right? Mike Singletary and Sam Mills come to mind. So this idea LSU needs a slow "smart" white walk on LB versus the studs they are signing assumes the ones they are signing lack intelligence. I assume you would prefer a fast, super athletic smart linebacker over a slow smart linebacker. At least I would hope so.

Aranda obviously liked the kid. And the kid must think he will have a shot at playing to pass on full ride offers from other D1 schools. Dont be suprised when you hear his name making noise next spring.
I wish Garnett nothing but the best, but he is not the first player to choose to attend LSU as a walk on that had other D1 offers. That, in and of itself, is not a predictor of future success at LSU. In fact, history says it will be difficult, if not impossible, to pass up those players the school chose to sign on scholarship at the position. Those athletically gifted ones you mentioned. Might be hard for you to believe but some of them might even be intelligent as well. I hate Bama, but Alabama seems to do quite well with the super athletic ones they recruit. In fact, it could be argued they have had the best LB corp over the last few years despite not having a slow smart one to lead them in the group.

Thank God you are not in charge of recruiting!

Put the pipe down bro, Saban is one of if not the best college football coach of all time. How could you argue with that? The NFL is completely different. Recruiting has always been the life blood of a successful college program and the great coaches now how to recruit.
