When I was 30 I had been married to my college sweetheart for about 9 years, had a daughter, a son, a career, a nice home, 2 cars, a boat; the American dream. But in a 6 month span I lost a job, got a divorce, sold the boat and moved back in with family. It absolutely sucked and my biggest fear in life was having screwed up kids because of divorce.
I was only out of work a few weeks and during the divorce transition I did the following:
1. focus on the kids and made sure they knew both of us loved them.
2. saved up for an old shotgun double.
3. worked out with weights and trained for a Marathon.
4. went out more, joined a coed Vball league and made new friends.
5. bought a canoe and started fishing in it way before Kayak fishing was a thing (both kids fit in it with me).
About a year and a half later I had a home that I had renovated myself, extra income from the rental, was in great shape, had a new girlfriend (after whoring around a while), and my kids were growing up just fine. I was happy again.
The key is balancing self-improvement with whoring around.

That's a life lesson right there.
