Were the writers just running out of ideas or did they feel like they needed to wake up the audience a bit?

I think they were trying to wrap it up and the tv thing was a big part of that. For the longest time, I forgot they were filming a documentary and it felt like they were just talking to the audience. The mic guy was a way to put the focus back on that. Plus she was lonely and probably frustrated. She was looking for attention.
I don't get the Pam hate either. They were a young couple growing apart. They were just as likely to divorce as re-connect. Jim had a choice to make and he chose his family. He seemed really happy. Going forward, I doubt they'd survive the move or his new career. Its all about him wining and dining athletes and celebrities. Pam's not about that life. She is a suburban mom that works in a small office. She'll be miserable.
Remember the episode when the warehouse workers won the lottery? That showed they had totally different goals/dreams in life. I liked that they showed that realistically..
