Reminder: Make sure you have the best set-top box your TV provider offers

This is something that will likely cost you nothing and improve your television experience at least as much as a new TV will.
I have Comcast's X1 service and have been using the same box for 2 years. It was laggy, prone to freezing and just terrible in every way (the RNG150N). Monday I read about a new one, the XiD, and swapped mine out for it the same day. It has made a huge difference in how much I enjoy watching TV. While I was at it I got the newest version of the DVR box & voice remote that now comes with it.
Regardless of whether you have Comcast, Cox, or DirecTV there's no reason to suffer with old equipment.

Canle providers are going to have to offer better boxes since the FCC's Unlock The Box initiative.

I called DirecTV a couple months ago asking for new equipment (I'd had mine for 3 years, so it was probably even older than that) and they told me I had to sign a new 24-month contract to get new equipment. I was planning to move in a couple months so didn't want to extend, so I just dropped services all together. They didn't budge, but hey, I'm saving $120/month now.

Did they just mail you the new box for free? I don't have the voice remote (not that I care to), but my x1 box is about 2 years old now. If free, I might call and ask them to send me a new one too.

Not sure how easy it is to get the best box.
Guy at work requested a box from Cox. They said sure. Sent him the same crap he had. He called complained. They sent someone out with the same box. Even though you can request a certain model, in small print somewhere it states "comparable" which to them simply means a box that works.
Guys spent lots of time trying to get the best box and I am not sure he ever got it.
