you have the option to send sms, google voice sms or hangout from the app as well as 'facetime' or use it as a phone dialer.

its the swiss-army messenger app on google.

it always remembers how the last text/hangouts came in from someone and thats the default to respond but you can change it before sending a reply if you choose.
