So my 13 year old loved my Outback, but i cant afford 2 Hobies. Any suggestions for say $500? Sit in vs Sit on?

Pelican has a good 12 footer for $400-500 and can find them on sale for less.
You can get a pretty good step up with an ascend FS12 at $600 or find it used in your price range

Walmart. Gets him in the water in the $180-$399 range. Safe. Save $$$.

I would go with either the Pelican Enforcer 120x (Academy) the Pelican Strike 120x (Dick's), Perception Pescador Angler 12 (Academy) or the Ascend FS10t (BPS). The Pelicans and Pescador are in the $550 range and the Ascend is $500.
Or buy used and find a much better boat for around the same price.

I'll look used, but the Ascend FS10t is only $499. Nice layout too. Would there be any advantage to the FS10 Sit In?

Sit in would only be a disadvantage.
Hot, constricting, no deck storage, no scuppers (not a huge deal but depending on age/skill they have a safety aspect)

Went to Bass Pro to look at the Ascend. The saleslady said she has the FS10t, but it's tippy. It sits too high in the water. Must be a design flaw. Too bad because it has the perfect layout for a 10' kayak.

Why not the fs12t? It's only $50 more.

Agree on the 12. Do yourself and kid a favor and go ahead and get it.
The 10 will track like a wet leaf, be tippy and frustrating in any amount of wind or current.
They will also be able to stand in the 12T

Keep an eye on Craig's list and be patient.
