We all know that English is the worlds default language. Most countries provide school children English as their second language.

At this point in time, which country do you think has had the most influence on the popularity of English across the globe?

England?

or

The USA?

England of course, but the economic prominence of the US post WW2 cemented it.

Because Sir Isaac Newton was British.

His advancement of science spurred the world's technological growth and development, radiating from England, outward and changed everything.

It's been said the most widely-used language in the world is Broken English.

The British certainly got things going, but the fact that most content on the Internet is in English really accelerated the trend. If you live in Podunkstan and want to improve your prospects, you must learn English.

I find it really interesting after traveling to many foreign countries how much of them speak English (besides a few 3rd world). The biggest surprise was that Singapores first language is English.

As far as the answer, England has been around far longer than we have so I would have to go with them overall. But we are a close second due to Hollywood.

Right now, the US of A.

Historically, obviously England/British Empire.

The English that other countries like China and India learn is the British version. Accent wise.

But yes, English is the default language and it's honestly not even close. When I go to a random city in China and stores everywhere have English signs and workers that make 450US$ a month can speak it, it pretty much tells you all you need to know.

It's America more than the British. Yes colonialism helped, but the Spanish Empire really did more to conquer a continent than the British did. They mostly just ruled over an already established population, while the Native Americans were pretty much just wiped out.

English is adaptable like few other languages. The local dialect easily borrows words and phrases from the indigenous language.

Before Hollywood came around French was the common tongue in most places of the world.
