Need help planning a California trip...

for my wife's 50th B'day. We will be arriving in San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon, and I need to be in L.A. on Wednesday night. She wants to do a Giants game on Sunday, but I'm open from then on. Probably spend Sun night in SF, then head south. What should we see, and where should we stay?

when in SF, go to PPQ Dungeness Island for Dungeness crab and garlic noodles.

Drive south on HWY 1. Carmel, Big Sur, St Inez Valley, Morro Bay, etc. If you wind up in Big Sur one evening then take the time to have a meal at Nepenthe (for the sunset) and stay at the Glen Oaks Motel. You won't regret it.

In SF, if you like banh mi, Saigon Sandwiches, almost a literal hole in the wall, has the best I've had.

One of my favorite places along that drive in the Big Sur area is Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. That's where you take a short walk to overlook Mcway Falls. It's a waterfall right onto the beach and it's gorgeous. Definitely worth a stop!

Guess they re-named Big Sur State Park.

Where to stay, what to do?

Well, my itinerary when we were there will probably be much different than yours given that my husband and I had 2-, 4-, and 7-year olds with us. We stayed at the Fess Parker Doubletree Hilton which is right by the beach and walked down to the big touristy pier for ice cream (met some other Baton Rouge tiger fans out there), walked around town, found lots of beautiful things to photograph (personal hobby), etc. We were there just for one night, passing through. Some friends of ours went the next year and spent the whole week in Santa Barbara (just husband/wife, no kids). They did wineries, more romantic things. Can't help you with those unfortunately.
The town itself is very pretty, though. I loved the sidewalk by the beach from our hotel to the pier. It was stereotypical California in my mind- beautiful water on one side, mountains on the other, towering palm trees, pastel-colored lifeguard huts, sailboats on the water, people doing yoga on the beach in one spot, playing beach volleyball on the next, etc. I would go back in a heartbeat. The drive/trip you are doing is probably one of my two favorite trips we've done.
