Has anyone mountain biked Lake Tahoe before?

If so, what trails are good? Should we do regular mountain biking or take a lift up and just do downhill?

My husband has gone twice mountain biking in Tahoe. I don't bike...I just hiked while he went biking.
The flume trail is a well known trail that is kinda known as a "must do" trail for mountain bikers/hikers.VERY SCENIC.
Currently you cannot take your bikes on the lift up Heavenly. At least you couldn't last summer. We heard they were talking of having that as an option in the future. I dropped him and his friend off at the top near Heavenly Ski Resort and they rode down to the bottom....where I just picked them up several hours later.

The lake's pretty flat and you probably won't make it far across the lake on a mountain bike.
Or a street bike.

Like nurse is telling you, I think the ski resorts open up to mountain biking in the summer months.
If you're staying on the North side of the lake, consider Northstar or Alpine Valley or Squaw Valley.

My husband and his friend really wanted to go here to bike but the schedule didn't allow for it.
Mammoth Mountain is a few hours from Tahoe as well. He REALLY wants to check out the mountain biking there. Has heard they have amazing trails.

Nurse,
Thanks for the info. We leave Thursday and I'm pumped to go. Last time I went true mountain biking was two years ago in Keystone, CO. That was a lot of fun as well.

That's in SoCal isn't it? That's a long way from Tahoe.
I'd imagine the entire Sierra mountain range has terrific bike riding. Probably at places like no one has ever heard of.

Have fun and be safe. You should see all the gear my husband wears for downhill mountain biking(full helmet, lots of pads, etc). They rode some double diamond trails that he said was fun as hell and scary as hell at the same time.

Nope...it's 3 hours from South Lake Tahoe. We pass by the road that you turn off to head that way each time we drive to Tahoe.

My lift pass says you can take your bike on the gondola at heavenly this summer.
Edit-maybe it was for kirk wood or north star. I just checked my heavenly app and the summer pass doesn't say anything about bikes.

Take the lift. If you aren acclimated to the altitude you will have a heard time with the ascents. I used to live in Taho but I don't recall the trail names. They will all be good if you are used to the South.

My husband will be so jealous, you could not do that when we were there...there was talk of it happening soon though.
That is what they did when we went to a bunch of ski resorts in Utah one summer (Park City, Sundance, etc). They strap the bikes to the chair and you ride down.

Just saw your edit. Maybe that is why he really wanted to check out north star...because of the ability to bring your bikes on the lift.
