If you don't have it, you pay an individual mandate when you file for your federal income tax.

She is still married to her ex (complicated) to get his insurance, but his company dropped all spouses who could get insurance through their own work, she's a teacher and can, but not until open enrollment. So as I understand it she's kind of in limbo.

Her hr supposedly told her that being dropped from his isn't a qualifying event. We're she to finalize the divorce she could. She's been to A lawyer to finalize but they are dragging their feet and from what she told me it could be a couple months.

I bet there's a lot of people who would rather just pay the fine than the ridiculous costs of insurance.

Do it the ole fashion way. Be personally responsible before you have kids and if you happen to get in this situation go to your family and pay for it yourself. Don't expect the tax paying public to foot the bill for you.
