Causeway staff
A meter maid is not a lifetime job. these people want raises, hire someone else that will do it for cheaper.

Everybody knows the Causeway Commission is one of, if not the most, corrupt organizations in LA (I am looking at you too Levee Commission). This shouldn't happen but almost certainly will.

I'm all for it.

the bridge is in desperate need of areas where vehicles can pull over, as well as improved safety rails along the southbound span.

proposed improvements include improved railing and safety bays for vehicles to move off to the side during accidents.

Let them shut the lights off again, the people will win.

If the Causeway Commission were more transparent about their contracting activities, I might be for it.
As it stands now, it is a boondoggle for a select few.
Their budget is ridiculous for what they do; way too many people and vehicles.

Why not??
For only the second time in 60 years tolls are being increased

The bridge opened in 1956. Since then, tolls have increased only once, in the mid-1990s.
I dont see a problem with that

Well they paid all the money to A&M for study after study on new guard rails. Have to pay for it somehow.

I wrote my post before I saw yours.
We must have run across one another IRL at some point.

I thought the total was to pay for the bridge. Shouldn't it have been paid off by now?

I wish we had more toll roads. Keep the poors away.
Texas building lovely toll roads left and right, get dat loop.

They already have these areas

it is paid off. maintenance is not free.
Replacement will need to be considered one day.

Exactly.
It is crock of crap.

It is very probably best maintained 24 mile stretch of road in the world.
I did see a bit of tarnish on one of the light standards, so hopefully, a few $100K will take care of that.

It's not just that..
It all sounds like a good plan to me
quote:
the bridge is in desperate need of areas where vehicles can pull over, as well as improved safety rails along the southbound span.
quote:
safety bays, or shoulders, be added to the bridge at regular intervals, with six on each span.
quote:
The 672-foot-long stopping areas would be spaced between the existing crossovers and would provide space for drivers to move their cars out of the travel lanes. The cost would be about $60 million
quote:
installing rails on top of the concrete barrier along the southbound bridge. The vast majority of accidents in which vehicles careen off the bridge into Lake Pontchartrain happen on the southbound span, where the barrier is only 25 inches high, 6 inches lower than on the northbound side.
Adding the rails would cost about $40 million, bringing the total for the recommended improvements to about $100 million, Dufrechou said.
Securing 30-year bonds for that amount would likely require tolls to increase by $1, he added.
Causeway officials have been pondering safety upgrades for several years. The ideal solution, Dufrechou said, would be to add a lane to each span. But that would cost nearly $2 billion.
It all sounds like a good plan to me

They ask for $2B and "settle" for $500M.
