I'm not a history buff, but I did listen to the Dan Carlin Hardcore History series on the Mongols. There's obviously liberties taken, but there is an aspect of truthiness to the series. Watch one or two episodes and that will give you an idea of what the series is like.

It's really good, but don't critique it for historic accuracies. Marco is a beautiful show with some written historical events, some based on legend, but more importantly the locations and period portrayal are off the charts.
I suggest The Last Kingdom as well, and try out several foreign films, several quality ones available
