Might head over to Cabella's tomorrow and pick up the 930 SPX, I have a Smith & Wesson M&P9 but have been wanting to get a semi auto shotgun for a little over a year. I have always felt more comfortable with shotguns than pistols.
For the price is it a good gun? ill shoot it at some friends camps every now and then, but it will be just another home defense gun.

I'm sure it will be fine but I gave up on Mossberg years ago.

Had a bad experience with a model 500 and overall I never cared for the fit and finish of my 835 ultra mag.

Is the overall rep of Mossberg not great?

I feel like they have always been a second tier gun. I grew up shooting a Remington 870 wing master and it was a much better gun than my model 500. I've since moved onto beretta for most of my new shotgun purchases except for an 870 tactical.

Higher priced mossbergs are pretty good. Lower end ones are typical lower end guns

I have an 835 mag that my dad gave me in high school. It was a 300~ academy special, it has been submerged, stuck in marsh mud, and fired 3000+ rounds but doesn't have a single rust spot and always hits the target. My brother has a nova that got pitted sitting in the gun case. I had two remingtons, one was ok and the other might have fired 50 shells out of 100. I sent that gun back to remington twice before I got rid of it. I have a 930 but haven't shot it yet,but for a low end semi auto the finish is great.

Unless you plan on putting a shite load of rounds through it or impressing the neighbors with high priced firearms, there's nothing wrong with a Mossberg.

I have a Mossberg 930 JM (10 shot).

Haven't put enough rounds thru it to be ready to rely on it as a home defense weapon.

I agree that Mossbergs are 2nd tier guns. (And some, like their AR style .22, are 5th or 6th tier).

And a maverick 88

They are so cheap you can abuse the shite out of them.

And I've never seen one stop working.
