Get someone to bring you on a nightime tour of the monuments.

As for the museums, it's a bit disappointing to me how the Smithsonians tend to present things these days. Is Archie Bunker's chair really the focal point of American History?

I dug the National Portrait Gallery, though.

Outside the usual stuff, you should spend some time just walking around the Georgetown area. That's my favorite part of the city.

Arlington Cemetary and changing of the guards at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Read up on the guards and what the requirements are to fully appreciate what they do

Ditto on Georgetown, very nice. If you're a baseball fan, the Nationals have a great park to go catch a game in summer plus they have summer shandy and some other good beers on tap. The monuments are great at night, especially when hot, although I was not forewarned how much of a hike the Jefferson monument was from everything else, but worth it. Check out the Newseum, very cool.

Yes! Arlington Cemetary is a MUST. We did this along with the Pentagon same day, which has a great 9/11 memorial where the plane hit there.

I like the zoo. I agree on what's been said about Georgetown and Old Town Alexandria is good too.

Because of my profession I like visiting the Supreme Court. I ride the Metro each time I go there as its good and can get you to a lot of places. I like going to Mount Vernon and Great Falls Park in McLean is nice.

My last trip there I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and spent a fair amount of time around there and the Tidal Basin, all of which was nice. It is a little off the beaten path but I really enjoyed staying in that area probably moreso that some of the more centralized hotels I've stayed at in the past.

If you're planning to travel here soon, be careful to read up on "SafeTrack". Metro is closing various parts of the Metro system for about 2 weeks at a time.

I once went on a tour of the Library of Congress and found it worthwhile. Not sure if still available.
