Why do people keep repeating this myth?

If you go back and look at all the players drafted with the picks traded, Williams is very well worth it.

You'd expect more than 3 years of good production from the #5 pick.

If we don't trade we could've drafted Jevon Kearse in 1999 and Jamal Lewis in 2000. No way you can say Ricky was better for the Saints than that would've been.

I don't think the OP is making that argument. He's saying Williams is one of the best players that happened to be drafted by the Saints.

He's arguing the actual player, you're arguing the benefit to the team drafting him. Those 2 USUALLY go hand in hand, but there are occasional differences.

Think of a different team:

San Diego, greatest 2nd round draft picks.

If you're a Chargers fan, I don't know that Drew Brees is that big a deal. A couple decent years for the Chargers, who picked Rivers in the first round a couple of years into Brees' career, and let him go after an injury.

But if you're going by what Brees has done in his career, then he's going into the Hall of Fame with a number of records and a Super Bowl win. And the Chargers are the team that drafted him, thus he's one of San Diego's best 2nd rd draft picks ever.
