Iowa friends coming in town. They should enjoy the southern charm and patriotic crowd.

The fireworks have become a lot more popular. More and more locals (the good kind) go downtown for the 4th now.
Other than being hot as hell, it's a pretty good time.
Essence isn't near as bad as many around here make it out to be.

The fireworks show is on two separate barges - one in front of Jax Brewery, and the other close to the Convention Center and the bridge.
This splits the crowds between the two areas.
Essence Crowd > Bayou Classic Crowd - not that those two festivals are related in any way....
Most of the Essence crowd watches the fireworks from the Convention Center area.
The French Quarter crowd is about the same as it is any other weekend.

Crescent Park is great spot to catch the fireworks

Weather conditions permitting, the fireworks spectacular typically begins aboard “dueling barges” anchored at mid-river at 9:00 p.m. The colorful, sonic-booming aerial display usually lasts 15-20 minutes, after which it’s time to go out and party in the French Quarter and celebrate.

Can't miss the true essence of the New Orleans culture.

This 100%. I had to go pick someone up downtown one evening and it was like a zoo out there.
