The subject. Granted he was sympathetic to blacks and went on to marry one and start a town of mixed people, his fight with the confederacy was about much more. I don't know if the movie touches on this but I really don't feel like sitting through s white guilt lecture to find out

I haven't read many reviews or people opinions in general on this movie, but do you know this is a white guilt movie or just assuming that it is that? And just because it's a movie about slavery doesn't mean it's "white guilt"
I ask because multiple people on this board said they didn't or won't watch Spotlight because they just assumed it was 2 hours of Catholic bashing. Not only is that far from the truth of the movie, they deprived themselves of a very good movie simply because they assumed it was something they didn't want to watch

Most of the critics I've listened to were just saying it's not an interesting movie. A lot of references to a made-for-tv movie.
A black critic I listen to (and usually disagree with even though I see his point) actually went on a long rant about how he was sick of slave movies and he never wanted to see another one again and it's a time to go on to something else.
I'm paraphrasing but
"Why does every major black actor have to be in a slave movie. Why is it a subject that we all have to continually go back to over and over and over again. Slavery sucked. We don't need to keep going back over that again and again. Instead of having all this talent making recitative movies, why can't they focus on getting parts in major pictures. You don't aim to be a good black actor or white actor or Asian actor. You aim to be a good actor period. And once we start appreciating good actors more and filling roles for talent than all this stereotyping, movies will be the better for it."

I just don't see a lot of entertainment value to the movie, especially after doing some research on Newton himself.
A lot of the movie was filmed locally that's why I became so familiar with the actually history of what really happened the way both sides tell the story. I have no interest in Hollywood's version

I saw this movie yesterday and found it pretty enthralling and well acted. To call it "white guilt" is bullshite. Lets face it the period covering the Civil War and Reconstitution is an ugly racial time period. Any film done realistically at all covering this material will have "bad guy" whites. Fact is their were many ugly racist at the time. The movie though portrays many white characters who were not racist in any way. The story is of course Hollywooded up some but the Kingdom of Jones did exist. They did say that they never seceded from Confederacy because they had never left the Union. They did declare there own "Constitution". The Reconstruction era black codes and Mississippi Plan did exist. The movie is not for everyone but the reviews for it are really off.

The movie previews make it look like Jones led a black militia. In reality there were a few blacks with him but it was overwhelmingly whites who backed him.
Also Jones County had poor soil and agriculture was extremely limited therefore there were not many slaves or black people in Jones County.
He did have an long running extramarital affair with a black lady and fathered many children with her.
Jones' second in command was a white guy who hated the Confederacy and named his son Sherman Ulysses. During reconstruction I bet this kid would have traded places with "A boy named Sue".

If Confederate's get killed by the bushel I might see it. Otherwise I expect it to suck.

I enjoyed it too. As s matter of fact I'm going to see it again tonight. I found the story compelling as I was totally unaware of it historically. Is it totally accurate? Probably not. But MM does a great job and I was thoroughly entertained.

My dad said its slow as shite and about 30 min to long
I still want to see it because mcconaghey
McConaughey works good in slow burn stuff, it fits his persona better than Rom Coms and his other shite with the exception of A Time to Kill. See Mud or True Detective.

That's funny because the Political Board already told me that this film was going to have critics raving about it all the way to its inevitable best picture nomination and win.
Which is ironic because I thought they loved small government and people standing up to the man on the PT.

The protagonist is a white Southern guy.

Jesus fricking Christ - do you have a financial stake in the movie?

I just don't see a lot of entertainment value to the movie
I agree, the trailer was very meh to me.
But I just don't get certain people that simply won't watch a movie because of the subject, such as a movie about slavery or the church and what not. Yes, some are gonna be race baity, white guilt movies. But some may be very good movies as well.
