I think it's more likely that when asked by the staff what it would take to sign him, or what his intentions were, those answers did not line up with what they were told be scouts, agents, and summer coaches they fact checked with.
nola.com had a good article about how the recruiting class was built and they really emphasized the part about gathering information from all sources to really get a feel on a kid. I doubt that emphasis just came out of nowhere.

I read that, but if he intended to sign then changed his mind you would think they make room. 4 tool outfielders straight out of hs aren’t common and you always make room for talent. Maybe he changed his mind about lsu too, who knows

It had to be. When the draft was over it was complete silence in regards to him. I know he has FSU '22 on his twitter but the entire thing just seems odd.
I think also what may have happened is he didn't commit to joining the team in summer classes and may have told the coaches he wanted to wait and see what happened this summer.
There may have also been word that he was interested in JUCO if he didn't sign.
It may not have been Mainieri's finest move but he has to trim some roster spots and he can spend time looking for spots to fill post draft (ala AJ Labas last summer).
I think after the signing deadline is over Mainieri will talk more on the subject.
