Just to clarify, Simon got offered at the end of the summer just prior to starting the 9th grade.
I also think it's too early for that kind of thing, Mainieri even said similar in an interview with USA Today (I think the interview is linked in this thread somewhere).
Softball seems to be offering even earlier. There were a lot of baseball programs with 2021 commits well before LSU. But this is becoming more commonplace. When we offered Dylan Moses (earlier in his recruitment than this kid, IIRC) it was big news. And in football it's still big news for an offer to go out that early.

There's pretty much no blowback to offering kids that early especially in things basically not publicized in baseball and softball. IF someone looks to be special early on, offer them and get them locked up if you can, if they turn out to be a dud 3-4 years later in high school, drop'em, and it's not like there will really be any negative press on you.
