Olajuwon most underrated player of all time?

Granted I live in Ohio. I put him in my top starting 5 of all time and people laugh but I can't imagine a better center if pick off a wall to play with me. So what say you?

I say upvote, the dream was the best!
Posted on 6/24/16 at 9:06 pm to gobuxgo5
I would say yes. But I'm biased.
Dream was incredible and often goes unmentioned when talking about the greatest players ever.
My second favorite player of all-time behind Jordan.

Unique skill set that hasn't been matched in the 20 years since his prime.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think most people would have him in or around their top 10 all time. Never thought of him as underrated.

let's also remember, he would play a month(?) every seeason, w/o eating, and fasting for ramadan. Yet still put up solid numbers every night during it.

He was an incredible player, but, would you put him before Jordan, Russell, Robertson, Chamberlain, Abdul-Jabar, Johnson, Duncan, Oneal, Bird, Petit, James?
Not taking anything away from the Dream, but, he is not a top 5 NBA player of all time

Hakeem had a great finish to his career but he spent alot of years underachieving and being a knucklehead prior to the Rockets runs in 94 and 95.

Who the frick doesn't rate Olajuwon? Let me put it this way. Olajuwon was selected #1 overall in the 1984 NBA Draft ahead of Michael Jordan yet I never heard anybody criticize the Rockets for selecting Olajuwon over Jordan. That's how great Olajuwon was.

I think he's up there on the underrated all time greats.

Although it shouldn't, I have always felt that he was forever unfairly smeared or had a taint on his resume for losing back-to-back NCAA titles - especially to NC State (Houston was supposed to be unbeatable. They were 31-2 heading into the title game.)
Although Olajuwon is the last player from a losing side to win the 1983 NCAA Tournament Player of the Year award.

Your opinion of him is based upon his great title runs in 94 and 95. He was in the league for ten years prior to that run and was nowhere near the skilled post player he was in his prime.

You could say Jabbar is criminally under rated as GOAT
He's the best ever HS player
He's the best ever College player
He holds the scoring record and was all NBA for a decade and NBA All Defensive multiple times
Yet when people discuss goat he never gets mentioned they go Jordan LeBron Wilt etc.

I feel like Olajuwon gets decent amounts of respect.
The guy I always thought deserved that title was Kevin McHale. Guy put up some very good numbers throughout his career. Just got overshadowed by Bird.
I'd easily put McHale as one of the top 50 players of all time.
Never really hear anyone talk about him though.

All of this.
I said this before too.
No one will ever have a resume like Kareem.
Kareem went something like 150-4 in his high school and college careers combined winning 6 championships.
3X National College player of the year (he couldn't play as a freshman otherwise he would have been 4X player of the year...his freshman team beat UCLA's varsity national champ squad in a game.)
3X NCAA tournament player of the year.
19X All-Star
6X NBA MVP
6X NBA Champion
Kareem won 12 championships. (3 in high school, 3 in college and 6 in the Pros)

Hakeem has 2 championships
Russell had 11
Chamberlain had 2
Robertson had 1 with 2 league MVP
Petit had 1
No way you can put him before Russell and chamberlain. And probably not the Big O.
He is a great player, but, there have been a lot better players

If we're narrowing this argument down to GOAT, then yeah, Kareem is definitely a candidate after MJ. But that's not what this thread is about.

I agree. The dream was a beast. So skilled
