Is Miles' new contract a good deal?

If I'm reading everything right concerning Miles' new deal, it appears that LSU is the only party that has incurred additional liability for a breach of said contract.
Terms of new deal:
1. Miles' salary is basically calculated the same as before (SEC Champ raise, N.C. raise);
2. Miles' gets additional money to spread around to assistants if players hit certain academic benchmarks ($150,000 to $250,000 to disburse to his coaching staff to reward them);
3. Miles and LSU extend Miles' employment for a few years (The contract had been slated to end Dec. 31, 2010, but the extension moves that to Dec. 31, 2012);
4. the contract termination clause was changed. If LSU fires Miles without cause, the coach could be owed as much as $15 million, up from $10 million;
5. Here is where the rubber meets the road: what is the "Buyout" for Miles, if he decides to leave
for any school and,in particular, Michigan. If this clause remains the same as the old contract,
LSU has really not accomplished very much with this new deal, other than create some positive PR,
which is a much needed thing for LSU right now.
Here's what bothers me: If Miles' buyout remains the same as old contract, the risk of losing Miles remains the same (yeah, yeah I know about the Miles pledge. I believe him. This post is strictly a review of terms, not a question of credibility).
If Miles starts digging a hole he can't get out of (the program starts losing), there is no way to stop digging. Where the hell is LSU going to get $15 Million?
Maybe there's something in this new deal for LSU that the press hasn't released. Guess we'll wait for the "New Deal" to be released to the public to
see what we just renegotiated ourselves into.

Sounds better than the contract Alabama has with Saban. Seriously, Miles re-negotiated this contract one month before his team plays in the NC game and was being pursued by his alma mater. We were not in a good posture for negotiations with him and should be happy that the admin didn't give away the farm to him. No school has a strangle hold on it's coaches these days and this is not a bad contract at all. It would also appear that Miles asked for the same types of concessions that Tuberville asked for at Auburn. They both realize that they can live like kings in Baton Rouge and Auburn for what they make and WELL PAID ASSISTANTS will keep them at a high level.
I think people are reading way too much into this contract re-negotiation.

Right. The $15 mil is a cap, not a definite payout. What it protects against is a rise in coaching salaries pushing Miles salary even higher.
That said, it is a good deal for LSU. We keep the coach with the most succesful 3 year run in LSU history and who has brought us to our 2nd title game in 4 years (I know, but still our second title game in 4 years). I would put the odds of him going to UM this year at less than 1%. With UM's history of not firing coaches (only Moeller, and that was for public misconduct) it is unlikely that Miles even has the opportunity to leave for UM before the end of this contract.

I agree with everything you've written, except the Tuberville statement. Tuberville has a $6 Million buyout.
At $1.25 Mill for Michigan and $500,000.00 for any other school, that won't scare off anybody.

"the sky is falling", "the sky is falling"
UNBELIEVABLE!!!
In his three years of coaching at LSU
THE MAN is 33-6...
Has lost but two games in tiger stadium (both in overtime)...
Has finished ranked nationally 5th, 3rd, (and quite possibly..1st)...
But this just isn't good enough for some!
They must be smoking the best sh#t in town...

The thing is, if Miles really wants to go to Michigan having a buyout get in the way of that is bad for everybody. Miles doesn't want to coach here, but can't leave due to the buyout. LSU can't get rid of him because of the termination clause, and the other school can't get their coach. In other words I'm fine with it.

The will decrease over the course of the new contract. It would take Miles not meeting expectations for 3 years or so to think he would get fired you are looking at more like $6 million. Still a lot.

I'm fine with concept of "if Miles doesn't want to be here". I agree. I, for one, wasn't worried about him leaving in the first place. I like Miles more than any coach that we've had in my lifetime (and that goes all the way to Paul Dietzel!), but we have the ability to get another coach, if we had to.
Problem with the contract: If Miles wants to leave, it will cost him up to $1.25 and as little as $500,000.00.
If LSU wants to fire him, it will cost as much as $15 Mill and as little as $6 Mill.
Seems a bit lopsided to me. Who is really taking the bigger risk?
I guess this isn't a problem if Miles stays until he retires and wins at least 9 games a year, beats Bama on a regular basis, and keeps major recruits at home; if any of these things don't materialize, I hope TAF has a BIG "rainy day" fund.
Final point and I'm off the topic, Tuberville was just as attractive to some schools as Miles was to Michigan. Auburn has a $6 Mill buyout and that didn't change with the renegotiation. LSU sweetens the payoff upon termination without sweetening the buyout.
Just appears we chased the truck and I hope we don't catch it.

No offense but it has got to be the most one-sided contract in all of college football. Sexton really worked Bama on this one.

The key part of this contract to me! With out good asst it is hard to win no matter who good a coach you are. I can even see where good asst. can cover alot of Head Coaching short comings!!!

i don't even disagree with you, but that wasn't my point. its just funny that it took all of two posts into a thread about miles' contract for it to get to saban.
