UW defense is going to be the clear strength of the team

So you’re telling me despite losing your all-world DC (to your opponent), losing nearly your entire secondary(CB and both Safeties), and an OLB, that the defense will be the strength?

Yup. It's a unit that was #2 in total defense last year, and despite those losses will still be far and away the most talented side of the ball.

Wisconsin will take a clear step back in coaching, but this is a traditionally solid, disciplined unit. They've finished Top-25 in Total Defense for seven consecutive seasons. I do not expect that to change, especially returning six of the front seven.

Joe Schobert was a phenomenal OLB, but Wisconsin still returns three of four LBs, one of which was rated as the No. 1 OLB by PFF in 2015. Jack Cichy, the kid that had three consecutive sacks against USC in the Holiday Bowl, will not even be a starter!

The big question in the defensive backfield is not at CB, given Derrick Tindal has started multiple games in his career and has plenty of meaningful clock. Coupling him with Sojourn Shelton (four-year starter) is a formidable set of defensive backs. The questions arise at safety with Arrington Farrar and D'Cota Dixon becoming full-time starters for the first time.

Narrative can quickly change, but Chitown_Badger is correct in that Wisconsin's defense should be the strength going into the fall.
