I think Jamie's arc has been gradually changing all season. He had to come to grips with the death of his daughter. And he had to try (and fail) to give his son some much needed advice.

And I think his interactions at River Run showed a good bit of increased maturity. He consented to Brienne's plan to try and talk sense into the Blackfish. He gave her Oathkeeper permanently even though she tried to give it back. He let Brienne and Pod go.

Of course he still has his incestuous infatuation with Cersi holding him back. But I think the showrunners are doing that to up the drama when the break does come - probably in a violent manner.
