I have thoroughly enjoyed the day or single night trips I have been on, but have never been the captain of the boat due to lack of sailing experience and of course lack of a sailboat.
Am considering a trip of a week or more on a sailboat in the Caribbean, but not until 2018.

My question is for any of those here with sailing experience. Do you know of any outfit in the NOLA area that gives sailing lessons and would recommend? I have considerable boating experience, but lack the experience at the helm of an actual sailboat.

Would like to take lessons this summer and perhaps build enough experience/resume to feel comfortable doing a bareboat excursion in 2018, perhaps in the BVI. Is that thought way out of line? I have been to and sailed the BVI, but charted a one day trip while staying on Tortolla, and would like to take the next step.

Would like to rent a catamaran and island hop for a week or more with friends and family and we would like to have the boat to ourselves, so considering this route.

Suggestions? Thoughts?

I sail competitively and for recreation out of SYC in NOLA. I'd recommend checking with Murray Yacht Sales. I know they have classes and certifications, but they can get expensive.

I think most charter companies will force you to take a captain until you prove you know what you are doing, unless you have sufficient sailing certifications or a sailing resume. You can probably check with different charter companies to see what they require.

Just an FYI, the catamarans in the BVI are not very good for sailing, but they are more comfortable than the monohulls.

Thanks.

I've been on both mono and cat and even my untrained eye can see the difference in performance, but I believe comfort will be a higher priority on this trip as will the less draft that a cat offers.

I've read up on a few outfits and all require some amount of proof of your abilities, usually sea trial for a couple hours to as much as full day at the helm.

I sail out of SWLA and plan on doing some charters in the future too.

Emerald Coast Yachts in Pensacola is a charter company and sailing school. They do "live-aboard" sailing classes so you'll be able to learn and have the enjoyment of a charter in one. I have not used them, but the wife and I have considered chartering with them for a quick weekend get away.

I've been on sailing trips and motor boat trips. Sailing is alot of work and boat isn't as comfortable to sit on for a week. Just get a captain and then you can enjoy the trip more. Best 10 days of my life boating around BVI.
