In 2013? No, no it didn't.

2013 was a hybrid 3-4, 4-3 with 3 safeties much of the game.

2014-2015 Payton decided to try to fix what wasn't broke by copy catting the Seattle D, jettisoning off all of our veteran leadership and bringing in the biggest FA disaster since Tootie Robbins to play a high S scheme that didn't fit our personnel or Byrd.

Ryan deserves blame, but it's crystal clear that Payton screwed up royally.

Think about how many young and upcoming players in 2013 that regressed the next two years.

Vaccaro
Hicks
Lewis
Jenkins
Galette
Glenn Foster

Now some of these weren't all scheme. Foster had knee issues, Galette, Vaccaro and Hicks questionable maturity, etc. But we took a top 5 D and all of the above regressed.

Jenkins becomes All Pro. Harper starts for a SB team. Byrd goes from All Pro to trash. Even freaking Abdul Isa Qudus is doing good things in the league.

The attempt to emulate Seattle and break what worked well set the franchise back two years.

Going into the 2014 season, a lot of people, including me, thought the D might be better than the offense. It was insane how badly they regressed due to the scheme.

I don't remember many cover 3 calls

Guess you could say we did it with a single high safety

It was pretty damn close to a 4-3 base, if that even exists these days. The "third" safety was Vaccaro playing the nickel until his injury.
