How are we viewing Mallex long term? Fringe starter? I mean let's look past his great start. Is he another Charles Thomas?

Ya I don't think he is anything more than a Juan Pierre type
Eta:Christ Juan Pierre hit .295 for his career. Maybe Charles Thomas is a better comp

Could go either way probably. Could wind up being a Bourn, or just a flash in the pan 4th OF.

I think he could be a Span type player. Hopefully not as brittle as Denard.

Jarrod Dyson is the comp I always had for Mallex, and I still see it but it does look like Mallex might have a little more power.

Mallex Smith is on pace to have a 4 WAR season despite a slow start
He has been more valuable that Freddie Freeman so far

I really just threw Thomas out cause he was a brave. I think Mallex is a better play. If he can have a career like juan, I would be thrilled we haven't had a quality lead off since furcal

He's just now clawed his way to the floor of his potential, IMO.
We're talking about a guy with a career .380 OBP that hasn't even gotten his MLB OBP past .300 yet. His .babip is pretty low too for a guy making as much contact as he has since his second week up.
I don't think he's a generational talent or anything but the more he has just gotten better and better. Once he starts getting on base at a higher rate and gets adjusted to MLB level arms behind the plate he's going to be a stud for us.
I'm not really a Braves sunshine pumper but he's been one of the only reasons to tune into a game this season

Ya I don't really have another comp off the top of my head that I think fits him, I'm optimistic that he can be a solid lead off guy long term but I just don't know yet

Somewhere along the Revere/Bourn/Span continuum. Revere is probably the comp I like best. If he improves his routes in the OF and steal % (I definitely expect that) I could see a Bourn like peak.

The juan comp doesn't make much sense to me past the speedy black guy part. Mallex's defense is worlds better than Juan's.
Juan could barely hit a cut off man

Same build. 5-9/10' 180lbs. .380 OBP in the minors. Also both hit .295 in the minors. I think Mallex has more power, but it's not a bad comp.

Except the whole defense being he backbone of Smith's value part

Great start was talking about offense, since defense never leaves.

If everything stays the same and his K/BB normalizes to near career average then we've got a plus defender in CF with a .800 OPS.
I think that's huge considering the lack of stability we've had there

He didn't have a .800 OPS in the minors.
