She's a good author (outside of that one terrible series), just not really someone I would suggest unless the person had read most of the other suggestions in this thread. Pretty much the same thing for Wheel of Time
I agree. I like Hobb but those books are in the top 20, not 10. I really enjoyed most of them but at a certain point they rely more on emotion and nostalgia than actual story.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud is really good.
The main character is hilarious and breaks the fourth wall throughout the book.
