re: Boxing: Canelo drops belt to avoid real challenges

really what benefit was there to hold on to the belt from Canelo's vantage point? Does Canelo really have any bargaining power if he's still the champ and there's a mandatory opponent for him?
He had all the leverage, which is why if he really wanted the fight, he would have kept the belt. First, Canelo is the A-side/main attraction (which is a major factor when it comes to the money split) and GGG understood that. Second, Canelo is THE champ in the division (Ring and WBC titleholder) and GGG is the one chasing those belts. Third, Canelo would want the fight in either Cali, Vegas or Texas and GGG/Loeffler have no problem with it.
The issue in this fight would be the weight. Canelo refuses to fight at the 160 limit. Canelo wants 155 and GGG wants 160, which is the actual limit in the middleweight division. But I think they could've worked out a 157 limit or somewhere in between, even though it's still not right.
What leverage does Canelo have now? GGG will be THE champ at 160 and he'll be the one calling the shots. Canelo had everything is his favor...but now? Nope. GGG was willing to give in to money, location, etc because he wanted the belt. Now that he has the belt, he's not giving into anything from Canelo's side.

Hold up. The middleweight champ won't fight someone else within the middleweight weight limit?

It's been that way for the last 2 years, thanks to Cotto and Canelo. The last time the middleweight title was fought at its 160 limit was April 2013 when Martinez defended the belt against Murray.

Doesn't Canelo still have all of the leverage? He's still the draw. He has the option of fighting someone else in Vegas and will still do a decent PPV number. Meanwhile GGG will just fight another bum in Inglewood.
From a purely practical point of view, GGG needs Canelo a lot more than Canelo needs GGG. I don't think the belts mean a lot here.
By the way I'm just mainly playing devil's advocate here. I don't like that Canelo dropped the belt either.

Canelo is a bitch for vacating. He didn't want to become the next good boy and be part of the big drama show. Middleweight is one of the most prestigious weight classes in boxing and this red headed clown is making a mockery of it. Straight poop.

Who is he going to fight? What weight division? Golden boy has zero fighters right now.

Sure, but not against Golovkin. Canelo can keep fighting glass jaw welterweights, washed up 154lb fighters without their trainer, washed up Mexicans with no defense, etc.

Correct. He'll fight nobodies and make good money. But he doesn't want to step in the ring with a monster. He made that clear a day ago.

GGG needed Canelo for the belt. Now he has the belt. GGG doesn't need Canelo anymore.

I listen to Max Kellerman a lot. He seems to think a Pacquiao/Canelo fight could happen if this with GGG falls through. We all know that would do a good PPV number.
But I can't argue that Canelo's proving himself not to be a take-on-all-comers type of warrior we hoped he'd be. He's just another typical money fighter of this era, carefully picking and choosing his spots.
I don't think he's deathly afraid of GGG, but Canelo's allowing himself to be managed. If he really wanted GGG bad he could get him.

Pacquiao/Canelo
That would be a Canelo move right here. And a cashout fight for Arum and Pacquiao. Or Tim Bradley
There has been chatter, though, about Canelo-Lemieux. That's an in-house Golden Boy fight that can be made.

A perfect fight for Canelo. Fight the guy GGG destroyed instead of GGG

Ok, at what freaking weight? Is he going to drag Manny to 155 or as it is called caneloweight? He can't make 147 anymore he being canelo and Manny is small as hell to go up so high. On top of that, it is a shite fight.
Posted on 5/19/16 at 2:30 pm to Marciano1
I meant simply that UFC is one organization, Boxing has too many alphabet champions, and too many promoters. If they had WBC for example as the only group, and the fighters were contracted through them. Then they could say hey we are gonna have Canelo fight GGG and that's it.

Canelo is WAY too big for Pac. That would be like sending GGG to fight Vlad just because the fight could be made.
I don't think there's any way Freddie would let that go through.

I could see Pacquiao taking that fight at 155 simply because it's a HUGE cashout fight to wrap up his boxing career. They would probably negotiate a rehydration clause, though. Canelo probably weighs 175 on fight night.
I wouldn't bet on it taking place, but I also wouldn't rule it out. Not when there's that much money on the table....

Junior-middleweight. Canelo would make 154.
Like Marciano said, it's the perfect Canelo move based on what he's done in the past.
Just telling you that he has options and could make money without GGG.

On what planet? That is 1 of the biggest fights out there and yes Pac would wipe the floor with Canelo.
Eta: It would have to be at a 150 catch weight also.

Not even close.

No way canelo makes 150. Manny is old this fight would be more interesting if Manny was younger.

Manny has demolished everybody he has faced recently. He was injured for the Floyd fight.
