I've always felt like it's more of a headache to look for a bank or ATM and I HATE paying ATM service charge fees.

I've never lost cash or had any stolen before but $1k is about my avg, but I honestly had no clue so many people brought so little. I still use my credit card for most things while on vacation and pre-purchase most of the things I can.

I guess I just feel nervous that CC companies can (and have to me while in Paris) shut down your card if you aren't able to verify a purchase....even if you've set a travel notification.

Went to Cancun last year with about $50 in USD. Used ATM at hotel to get roughly $500 in pesos. Used AMEX with no foreign transaction fees for everything else.

AMEX shutting down my card would be extremely rare.
