In those good old days the University charged an athletics fee so every student paid for admission whether they went or not.

In my good old days, we paid the athletics fee and for football tickets. All other sports were free to get in.

Also with punching the IDs (as opposed to having game tickets) the AD had no clue as to how many students were let in. It seems that there was no limit on how many students attended football games.

1979 v. USC. There were so many students in attendance that there were no aisle in the student section. Every square foot of "available" seating area was used.
