I watched this Guillermo del Toro movie a few days ago, and though I'd heard many good things for years and was expecting it to be great, I was absolutely blown away.
It reminded me a lot of Peter Jackson's style in LOTR, as far as both the special effects as well as the world the movie builds.
I was inspired to watch it after reading the thread about the most satisfying movie deaths, and that ws indeed a very satisfying way to overcome the antagonist.
Beautiful movie, not just in terms of cinematography but in terms of emotions and humanity- oddly enough considering the heavy fantasy elements in the film. It was like a modern day parable, idk if there's any source material it's based on but it blew me away with its originality.
Are there any similiar movies the board can recommend? I just saw Crimson Peak, and while I was highly entertained, it wasn't quite as amazing.

Should have won best picture.
But The Departed won that year I believe.

It's a little more "artsy" but Pan's Labryrinth is highly influence by "Spirit of the Beehive."

One of my favorite all time movies.

If you're looking for something similar, I'd recommend The Orphanage. Different thematically, but I'd say crafted similarly.

Pan's Labyrinth is the only movie I consider 100% perfect. It has no flaws, IMO.

i remember seeing this in theaters when the BR Rave (i think) had a special thing for artsy fartsy movies. PL was the first movie showing and the manager came out to thank us for supporting it and no cell phones etc. it was pretty cool
the movie is simply amazing from all aspects. engaging story. good acting. terror-inducing. beautiful. etc

I can't get past the subtitles. They just kill my enjoyment of a movie.

Perfect movie. Wouldn't change a thing about it

This movie is great, I agree with someone above who said to try the Orphanage. Also by del Toro and extremely well done. As for the subtitle bitcher, I prefer it in Native languages for realism sake, but then again I am not a fricking teenager and can read ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)
