Thanks Teague, that helps a lot. I had heard they needed to be fitted but did not understand if it was the size of the bow or what. So that likely means I can buy a used one off of say ebay (there are several listed under $100) and pay a bow shop to fit it?

Your best bet is to find his draw length BEFORE you buy anything. Some bows (Mathews solo can models for one) have draw length specific cams. You'll have to spend $80+ for a new cam to change the draw length.

Have him stand with his back to you and arms extended parallel to the ground. Measure finger tip to finger tip and divide by 2.5.

The 2 things you look at on a compound bow are draw length (mentioned above) and draw weight which is how difficult it will be to pull back.

If you buy one off of Ebay make sure it has an adjustable draw length for sure... it will usually be something like 25"-30" or if you purchase a newer youth bow that is adjustable it will be approximately 17"-30"

There aren't as many out there with adjustable weights... but for an 18 year old just starting I think this is an important aspect. He will likely get stronger as he starts shooting and will want to increase the speed of his arrow at some point.

Look for a used Mission Menace, Mission Craze, or Diamond Infinite Edge... all are excellent adjustable draw length and draw weight.

Remember if you purchase a "bare bow" that you will need accessories like a rest and sight. Stabilizer and quiver would be optional.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
