Just found out it's an LA Noir series (which I love). Is it worth investing 20 episodes in? How does it compare to LA Confidential or Chinatown in tone?

Season 1 is decent. Season 2 is really good. I wouldn't compare an Amazon TV show with 2 great films.

I would recommend it, it is a slow burn crime drama that doesn't bore you.

Their are definitely elements of film noir in the series. Bosch is a cop of course but he is in situations where he is on the edge of law or in trouble with his superiors and even doing his own work almost like a PI (especially in S2). It has a good LA feel, equal parts taking place under the hot LA sun and dark city scape.

The show definitely comes into its own in S2. The acting seemingly improved and the story flows better. It has a cool, easy going feel with no wasted energy. Maybe it's the jazz but the show is easy to watch.

Yes. As I cop, this show rivals Southland for me personally. It hits on many of the overlooked stresses of LE such as douche canoe supervisors (Capt Pounds), idiot media personalities (in real life there are good media people too), family stress from the job etc. Great show.

I'm 3 episodes in with no complaints so far. As one of the other posters said, it's real easy to watch.

I've been hesitant to start this show just because of how much I love the books. Harry Bosch is my all-time favorite fictional character.

For any who read the books, does it follow the same sequence or did they take the character and makeup their own plotline?

they combined plot lines from different novels ( City of Bones, Echo Park, and The Concrete Blonde in Season 1) and changed some of the characters ages. Bosch is older, but he is partnered with a young Jerry Edgar for instance.

Nice, The Concrete Blonde sounds like it would be awesome if done well. I always thought Black Echo could be an awesome adaptation but maybe just for a movie.

And yea I'm undecided on the Bosch casting. I love Welliver in almost everything he's in, but he is NOT what I pictured for Bosch.

Regardless it's next on the list for me after I finish Season 2 of Daredevil.

Same here. I started reading the Bosch novels about 4-5 years ago. Read them all in sequence, and caught up on the Lincoln Lawyer books and crossovers as well. There are a few main differences, like it being set more in modern day LA and Bosch being a Desert Storm vet instead of 'Nam. That was part of the appeal to me in reading the books, all the differences we have in technology, it was like stepping back in time to the early 90s. I always pictured Bosch different than Welliver, but the casting absolutely works. He nails it. He was decent in his limited role in Lost, and then in some show with Kiefer Sutherland after 24 that never really took off. But he nails Bosch.

In terms of a quality tv show Bosch is miles behind southland imho. There was a grittiness to southland, which was a very under appreciated gem, that sets it apart from Bosch. The episode of southland where both cops get kidnapped was just brutal. I also appreciated how the show could just start out as a normal day/patrol and then quickly everything went to shite. I loved that show.

To me Bosch seems like a pleasant enough show that's a step above from what you get from a similar type show on cbs. It's an enjoyable watch, and the titular character is captivating enough to hold your attention.

I think TW's portrayal of Bosch is one of the best parts of the show. He's done a good job of making the character his own. The TV show Bosch is different from the books, but the essence of the character is the same.
