What happened to the rank of corporal? What's with this specialist thing for e-4?

How old are you baw?
Specialist E-4 - (as we currently know it, but the "4" was dropped a few years back) is about 60 years old now.

Corporals are still around, at least in the infantry.
Specialists are the highest non-NCO rank; corporals are the lowest NCO rank. While technically the same grade and pay, a Corporal outranks a Specialist.
We'd throw Corporal on some kids sometimes if they were acting team leaders as E-4's and looked like they were about to be promoted.

Corporal is still around, it's just not used much at all. As has already been posted, it's considered an NCO and is usually reserved for someone in a leadership position. I don't know how common or uncommon they are now. But back in my day 80s & 90s they were quite rare. The vast majority of soldiers, including myself went from private first-class (E-3), specialist (E-4), to Sargent (E-5).
Now back in the 50's through the mid-80's there were higher "specialists" ranks going all the way up to "Specialist 9".
E-4 (still used today)
E-5
E-6
E-7
E-8
E-9

Are you just noticing the movement away from Corporal? I was Spec 4 back in '70.
That is far from the goofiest thing the Army does but they still do their part in winning wars even if the politicians do screw it up.

Corporal is still used just not that often. It's used when you have gone to the promotion board and will be promoted to E-5. It's basically gives E-4s command over other E-4s. You are technically E-4P (P being promotable).

It's actually been around since WW2 (my Dad was a T/5). However, E-4 is the only specialist rank now. Years ago the specialist rank went all the way to E-9. So my point is why are SPC only one paygrade?
