I enjoy both preparations. When I grill burgers I build a super hot charcoal fire and sear them on each side, then move to cooler part of the grill to finish. Also occasionally throw some smoking pellets in and close the lid for a couple of mins.

To me there is nothing better than an outdoor chargrilled burger. You can't replicate that flavor.
