Williamsburg, Va questions

We're in Doswell, Va. for a tournament and have most of the day free tomorrow. We're right next door to King's Dominion amusement park, but I'm noticing we're only an hour or so away from some historic areas and think that would be more fun.
What's the best tourist attraction for a half day? Just at a glance, I see there's the real Jamestown settlement that doesn't seem to offer much, a fake Jamestown settlement that isn't too appealing since it's fake, and Colonial Williamsburg. Anyone familiar with this? Is it one large area I pay to get into that gives me access to several historical sites?
What's the best bet while I'm in this area? Thanks.

I recently moved away from the Williamsburg area.
The area really doesn't have all that much to offer.
However, Busch Gardens is outstanding.
If the weather cooperates I would suggest hitting the park up.

Colonial Williamsburg & Jamestown are wonderful, do not miss.

Just hit Busch Gardens in Orlando last year and heading back to Universal for the gazillionth time later this year, so we'd rather go historical.
Thinking of hitting Jamestown and Yorktown Battlefield in the morning, then trying to squeeze in Colonial Williamsburg in the afternoon. Don't know if we have time for all 3.

I live in Williamsburg. Jamestown is worth it. They have a huge museum that is really nice then you can walk to the replica of the settlement, they have ship replicas you can tour and then the camp has all the houses. The employees dress in attire of the times at both Jamestown and colonial area, they will answer any questions about the era. They will fire muskets too. Then you have to drive to the original settlement that they have excavated. It's really pretty Area on the James river.
Colonial area is huge and they have reenactments, shows daily.
I would pass on Yorktown, I think they are still building a new museum there, so not as much to do.

I highly recommend Jamestown and Williamsburg, Jamestown may not appear to be much, but it is very historically accurate and very well kept. Great taste of history. Same goes for Williamsburg, beautiful colonial era feel.
Kings Dominion is meh. Loved it as a kid, but it has gotten somewhat trashy. Busch Gardens in Williamsburg is much better.

Are there separate museums at the "real" Jamestown and the replica Jamestowne, or just one museum for both - and how far apart are the two Jamestowns? I definitely want to see the real thing. We've got maybe 5-6 hours once we get there - could I hit both Jamestown sites and the Colonial Williamsburg?
We're really just here for our tournament, but I wish we had another couple days to see everything in the area.

One museum at Jamestown and then the 2 settlements the original is about a mile away but you have to drive there from the museum/replica settlement
You could do both but you'd need to hoof it through Colonial and not see much. You could spend the whole day at colonial Williamsburg and not see everything. But if you walked the length of D.O.G street and back and just browsed around for 2 hours then you could likely do all of Jamestown in 3-4 hours

Thanks for the info - exactly what I needed to know.

I got chills the first time I visited the original Jamestown site. The only original structure remaining is part of the Church (originally built as a Church of England). The church was the site of the first recorded democratic process in the New World as the male original settlers (shareholders) voted there on issues facing the colony.
Just ~160 years later came the American Revolution.
Amazing how fast our country germinated.

We got a late start, so we basically only had 4 hours or so once we hit the area. Started at the real Jamestown - seeing the actual historical site was my main priority. From there we hit the glass house and watched a quick glass blowing demo. Had about 2 hours left and really wanted to do Colonial Williamsburg, but Siri was telling me it was a 57 minute drive. Decided to just hit the "fake" Jamestown Settlement, which was really worth it for the museum. The replica ships were pretty cool to see as well when you consider how many people were on them for such a long journey.
I really wish we had another couple days there. Would love to have had another couple days. I'd like to hit Monticello and Mt. Vernon in addition to Colonial Williamsburg. I never would have guessed there was so much to do around there and will definitely consider the area for a future vacation (planned right).
ETA: Also saw a bald eagle and its nest at Fake Jamestown. Pretty damn cool.

Cool! Siri doesn't know what she is talking about. It would have been a 10 min drive tops to colonial Williamsburg but at least you got to see all of Jamestown. Glad y'all enjoyed it.
Yeah you can do a lot here for vacation. They recently opened up a shooting range in colonial where you can shoot the old musket rifles. I think it's about 150$ or so but I'm gonna check it out
