How hectic are the schedules of doctors? Are you on call constantly? Do you have to wake up at 3 in the morning because the answering service is calling you for someone's panicked message?

Generally one doc on call on a rotation. They have very hectic schedules. New coding info recently makes them have more paperwork, the staff as well. ACA has made it more difficult for some as well.

24 on 48 off and plenty of time to work a side job. Many cut grass for part time work.

Lulz. My family doctor works 9-6 Mon to Friday, you can't contact the guy outside those hours and it takes weeks to get an appointment. The dude sucks.

They schedule a 1:00 apt only to show up an hour later talking in the hall about how good lunch was. Meanwhile I'm sitting on a table wondering where the frick he is and why I even made an apt. Every doctor is like this.

Too bad for them they can't have nurses schedules. Work like 3- 12 hour shifts, get 8 days off, get paid $100G a year.

How hectic are the schedules of doctors?

See 20-30 patients in a clinic day. I start my clinic days at 8:00 AM, break for lunch and start back at 1:15, my office is in the hospital complex, so I don't go anywhere for that lunch-time, I'm usually either on labor and delivery or finishing those infernal charts during this time. I'm Ob/Gyn, so sometimes deliveries are sprinkled in on those clinic days, and sometimes laboring patients take a day well into night. Also I have one full surgery block OR day a week and an extra 1/2 block day every other week. That is usually 3-6 cases for a full block day.

I am in a call rotation of 10 doctors- hasn't always been like this. It is glorious, and I would hate, hate, hate to go back to the old 1-in-4. It took me a while to realize there is more to life than work.

Yes, sometimes, and yes it sucks. When we are on call, it sucks, and it is pretty much guaranteed I'm gonna be going in to the hospital.

But, it is an interesting and intellectually stimulating occupation, and most people appreciate what I do for them and the financial reward is commensurate with how hard I work, so when it's really, really busy, I always have that to fall back on.

As an ER physcian, I get to make my schedule. Each ER is a little different but most are 12hr shifts.we usually work 12-15 shifts a month so your schedule can be as hectic as you want or as easy as you want. Each speciality is a little different but no call for ER thank God.
