This is what appears to be going on:

1) Herbstreit MUST have confirmed this info with a good source, i.e. Desmond Howard who is not only his colleague at Espn but ON THE MICHIGAN SEARCH COMMITTEE
2) So the deal was ready to go through but LSU has tried to make Miles "an offer he can't refuse", i.e., Here's some absurdly lucrative contract (highest paid coach in football or something) if you sign the dotted line before 4pm. If you don't you're fired effective immediately.

Why wouldn't Desmond leak this himself so he gets all the credit instead of Herbstreit? Is it because he is on the search committee and can't officially say anything?
