Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check it out. Always thought it was private.

It used to be pretty terrible (near goat ranch status), but they just finished a $2 mil renovation and it is in much better shape. It is better than Southwyck and Clear Creek now. The best part is that there is barely anyone ever there, so I have played some cheap, fast rounds on weekends over the past couple of months.

I don't think you can play Champions or Lochinvar publicly. For public courses, try any of these:

Woodforest - all three 9s are good, but my preference is front to back (not west)

Cypresswood - The Tradition Course

Cypress Lakes

Blackhorse -South course

Out of those 4, I would choose Woodforest but it's the most difficult for you to get to from Pearland (the only one remotely easy from Pearland is Cypresswood, but it's still about 25 miles). Wildcat is decent too - I prefer the Lakes over the Highlands.

f you are staying in Pearland check out Timber Creek. Its in Friendswood, easy drive. Its a 27 hole setup not located in a subdivision, green fees are around $50. Its one of the better deals in Houston.

Forgot about this one now that I live on the north side of town. Haven't played it in about 2 years but it was in great shape and reasonably priced.

Memorial isn't bad for a public course.

Friend played it about 6 months ago and was very disappointed in the greens, which used to be some of the fastest in Houston. I would make sure you get a thumbs up from someone who played more recently. It's a great layout and a must play if the greens are back to normal.

Definitely. Its just hard to get a damn tee time.

I also forgot about Timber Creek. I've never played it, but have heard good things.

I could get you on at any course, other than Tournament courses at GC Houston and The Woodlands.

Surprised nobody brought up Memorial in here.

It has a great layout.

Not the best course in town, but definitely the best value in town. A solid 27 hole course for about $60-$70.

I played Golf Club of Houston a couple of weeks ago and it was pristine. The course conditions were some of the best I have ever played. The forecaddie said the course is best played in the March, April & May months because of the preparations for the Shell Houston Open. It was around $100 green fee, which is a steal.

How? And I had my weekends messed up, it's Masters week/weekend I'd be going and the tournament course at GC of Houston has plenty of tee times, should be good the week/weekend after the Shell?

Go play GC of Houston. You will not regret it.

I'm awesome #1, but mostly because golf maintenance is my industry.

They leave the course in the same condition as was played for the tournament, which makes the rates higher as well. If you don't mind a $150 round, go for it.

So, I'm free for a round at River Oaks next week. Just let me know when you can get me on.

It's got people playing on it everyday and looks to be in great shape.

But it never looks packed.

Champions if you want a cool course that hosted the US Open.

Play Sharpstown if you want a PGA Tour course around 1965.

Wildcat is nice, but if you walk outside and it is breezy where you are it will be howling at Wildcat. Hit two of the best drives of my life their. 350 yard 3- wood. Down hill with a ton of wind. Back the other way and scalded my driver into and uphill for about 210.

I've never hit a more pure drive. And it went 210. That place can be a bitch.

What? It's always a five hour round on the weekends. They are doing some renovations, so hopefully it will be better when they are finished. I played there about a month or two ago and the greens were God awful.

ETA: My buddy played a 3-hour round out there yesterday at noon and said the greens were alright. Still don't think I want to pay $60 to play it right now though with the renovations going on.
