This job is the equivalent of being a travel agent. Not a good long term career move if you are young.

I don't know that you're cut out for this. Come back in another 6 months and let's talk.

You've got to take like 32-40 hours of classroom time, take the test at a testing center and get your producers lisense.

I did it years ago. Took the class in a week. Did practice tests. Scored well on the test.

Then got hired in another industry.

Great job if you enjoy rejection. It's all cold calling.

In Louisiana you can take your 40 hours of pre-license training online. You can then take the test to get your various licenses. I'm not sure about doing it part time. You can either become an independent agent or be a captive agent.

Going captive has its pros and cons as does going independent

I agree. Captive is sometimes the best way to go starting out as you get more support, startup money, etc.

To those that think insurance agents will be a thing of the past, I'll say this. There is a fortune 50 company that is the leader in auto, homeowners, life, boat, etc. Same company pioneered the agency concept. That company continues to grow at an explosive rate. Increased its net worth by over 20 billion in 4 years. People value the relationship they have with their agent. Sure you can buy insurance online, but in moments of need you'll wish you had someone to call that could help you get through your most trying moments in life. Agency isn't going anywhere.

It is not a part-time job if you want to do it correctly. Just be ready to work hard. Remember this. Go multi-line. You will build up your business with p&c. Sell life and health to round out. 200 plus a year is not hard to reach.

Agents for the company I mentioned earlier are pulling 500k gross on average before any sales bonuses in the DFW area. The top agents pull in 2-3 million a year. Multi-lining is the only way to go.

It's tough and the thing everyone turns to in a crisis who has no real career path.

Most likely you will waste 3 yrs of your life figuring out that its not for you.

First 3-5 months some company blows smoke up your arse as they get you to sign up all your relatives and friends while some tool gets all the commission.

You pass the test and start buying leads at 7-10 bucks a piece which have been sold to 10 other agents the same day.

You finally figure out that this is bullsheet and as you walk out with your head down there's 25 new faces all excited to make millions.

I work in the Industry, I'm the one who declines your grandmother due to medical history. Then you have to explain it.

Of course they do. I guess people are too stupid to realize that there is huge variation dependent upon what company you choose to sell for. There are plenty of shitty insurance carriers that will hire anyone off the street by posting on indeed, give you minimal training, and throw you to the wolves.

In my case, your examples are not correct. I never bought a list, never had someone else make my commissions. I did not walk out after 3 years with my head down. I chose to retire after 20 years. I exceeded my wildest dreams(second career). It is not for everyone. It may be for the OP. Also, never cold called in my career.
