This is correct. All you holding the button does is tell the opener to bypass the sensors.

My ex's aunt didn't use her garage door for 3 years until I went over there one day and tried to open it. Evidently someone hit it when they were moving in, and they just kept it closed for the next 3 years. Adjusted the sensors, and she thought I was Bob Villa or something

How do you check the sensors and determine if aligned,good, bad?

This. Had the same problem a few years ago, turns out, my sensor was pointed across the street.

I'm sure my wife had something to do with that.
