Both points of view are partly correct. Scouting has resulted in hitters keeping their bats on their shoulders when Lange buries his curve in the dirt. Last year they were swinging at that. This has put more pressure on his fastball.

Also, as someone pointed out, he seems to be having some mechanical issues from the stretch. Although I'm always suspicious of that kind of statistic. It's like how batting averages are always higher with runners on base. Base runners are kind of a sign that the pitcher is struggling, right? I'd expect batting averages to be higher when the pitcher is struggling.

His knuckle curve is just nasty. You can watch all the film in the world but when he throws it right, it will fool people more times than not. Ben McDonald commented the other night it looks like when he is in the stretch his arm motion is telegraphing it to the hitters which last year that wasn't a problem.
