Is it possible to only pay and get the plan when I am travelling internationally? Can I bring any old phone to get Project Fi on it? What are some other (cheaper) options for me to have Data and maybe calling/text when I am travelling internationally?

you can pause the plan at any time so I believe so

technically yes but first you have to activate your Project Fi SIM in a Nexus phone. You can then use any other unlocked GSM phone but it will only work on the T-Mobile network

I wonder if I can just sign up for a month of the lowest plan and buy then phone then cancel until I'm done with ATT.
Meh, I'll wait to see the OnePlus Three or something else. Expandable memory is pretty important as well as removable battery. It seems quick charging kills batteries from what I've read. I have noticed this on my Note 4. I feel bad for the Note 5 if it does seem to kill batteries and you can't replace them.
