So if you use TOR, do you automatically get to the weird shite or do you still have to look for it? Wouldn't you still have to go searching for an assassin or Silk Road?

From what I understand TOR doesn't utilize search engines like Google; you need to know web addresses in order to get somewhere (and they're always spelled "347846348732hjrffgr.onion"). The Hidden Wiki is a popular starting point that lists all sorts of categories/sub categories.
