Times Square of course is what comes to mind but is one area "better" than another?

depends on what your plans are to do....if you're going to Broadway shows and museums, Times Square is perfect (I highly recommend the Crowne Plaza right on Broadway..awesome hotel, have stayed there several times)
If you plan to do 9/11 memorial and museum and not Times square things, then stay in lower Manhattan.
There is a really nice hotel outside of Times Square but close enough to walk---it's the Roosevelt Hotel. Loved it...I forget what street it's on...will google and get a link for you. Highly recommend it too!

Thanks ... I've been looking at the Times Square area mostly ... the Millennium, The Grace, The Row ... I just get freaked out when I read the reviews of some of these places. It only takes a few bad ones to make me say NO WAY.
Mostly plays ... thinking of taking my 15 yo dtr this summer. She wants to go to a Yankees baseball game, Central Park, plays, some cookie shop, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge ... life is too short and it be a nice get away for us.
Thanks again.

sounds fun! I've stayed at the Millenium (the one on 44th (?? I think) street...that vicinity. Only one time but it was very nice too.
The Hampton Inn on 8th ave. one avenue over from Broadway is very nice too.

Seriously. Avoid Times Square like the plague. It's nothing but touristy shite and overpriced hotels
Would highly recommend going somewhere else in mnahatten. It's easy to get anywhere via subway or taxi. Air bnb was the best way to go for us near east village

We just stayed at Novotel in Times Square last week and it was great.

Times Square is touristy and busy and noisy but it's a great location for Broadway shows if that's what someone is there to do. The Crowne Plaza there is really quite nice, have stayed there several times. Request one of the top floors for a great view.

Don't stay in Times Square, that place is a cesspool.
Stay in midtown, Chelsea, Gramarcy, Murray Hill, etc.

You don't have to sleep there to do Broadway.

when I go into the city I'm going specifically to see a show or two....I'm female and I go with my sister or female friend. We like to stay in a hotel within a few blocks of the shows we're seeing so we're not walking late at night, or having to hail a cab. It's convenient to stay there if that's where your desired activity is.

Don't stay in Times square. Either Midtown or Financial District- or even SoHo.
