Lau pa sat is a decent first try at a hawker center, but it is widely agreed upon as basically the McDonalds of that whole scene. Next time, you should try to get out into the neighborhoods and find more local ones.

Little Arabia and Little India both have amazing hawker centers (as well as "regular") restaurants.

The last 2 times I went to Singapore I literally did not have a single "nice" meal - everything was cheap, local and delicious.

Try to stay at the Fullerton next time you go. The breakfast buffet is ridiculous - it has stations for basically every ethnicity you can imagine.
