When I was a kid the radio stations (we had one rock AM station in Lafayette, one rock FM) would sign off at midnight.
After that you'd hope that the weather was right for you to pick up KAAY in Little Rock.

Yep. They'd play the Star Spangled Banner and then that was it, no TV.

I don't think these overentertained kids nowadays could handle it. There would be a "triggering" of Biblical proportions.

Today people want to draw blood when the cable goes out and they're reduced to watching from their antenna, streaming, and DVDs.

That is where the term "mix tape" orginated from. The ability to put whatever songs you wanted on a cassette tape. I had 2 tape boxes filled with tapes. Those were the days....
I have a bunch I made from 6th-9th grade that are AWESOME.

I thought I was in heaven when I moved from Virginia to Louisiana after 2nd grade because the school buses had SPEAKERS in them and we listened to music to and from.

Damn. We had an old bus with no air and fiberglass seats. Most of the windows were stuck and would not go down. The bus driver was this old WWII vet who was missing his left hand. He had a prosthetic hook in it's place. If you messed up he'd move you to the front seat over on the right hand side of the bus. If you messed up again, he had a 2' long sawed off broom handle with a 3' long piece of garden hose attached to the end. He'd drive the bus with his prosthetic hook and wear you out using that stick and hose in his right hand. That damn thing hurt like hell.

At the start of every school year I'd get five brand new pair of Toughskins, one for every day of the school week.
Damn, y'all must have been rich. We got a couple of pairs and mom was a wiz with the patches.

Growing up WDSU was the only station we got. At 10 o'clock they'd play the SSB and sign off and show a test pattern the rest of the night.

Rich? No. But looking back we were actually pretty well off. The woman I called "momma" was actually my maternal grandmother. She was a widow who drew my grandfather's SS and pension from Republic Steel. She also had her own SS and retirement from her days of selling Insurance for Independent Life Ins Co. And then on top of that she got SS checks for both me and my brother because both our parents were dead.
She used it all except the SS checks she got for us. She never touched those. Instead they were deposited into CD's at the bank every month. Those were supposed to be used for our college. But when she died her brother (my great uncle), who was the executor of her her estate took all the money from the bank and spent it. In fact, counting the CD's and all her other assets, she left us a pretty solid nest egg to get us each started out pretty well in life. We never saw the first dime of it. Hope that son of a bitch is burning in hell.

They were both killed in a car accident two weeks after my first birthday. At that time my brother was a couple months shy of two years old.
