If I could choose only three:
Battle Cry of Freedom - McPherson (the best one volume history of The Civil War)
Grant - Jean Smith (brilliant biography and lucid account of Grant's campaigns)
Team of Rivals - Goodwin (engaging history of Lincoln's masterful political handling of the war)
